■ARTIST STATEMET■

The main theme is "a riot of emotion". I express it through a kind of animal that resembles a human face, thick texture of oil color, collective lines of tempera, and pattern.

When I look at a people's facial expressions and movements, sometimes I got shocked just like I receive a blow on the back of the head. I can feel the moment in everywhere like story, music, and everyday life. I don't know how to call it. However, It might cause by the grief for the deaths of my friends which has been suppressed and ignored, or the repressed brutal nature in myself, while living daily life. I am trying to paint about it. A portrait without intensive movement and a pattern means suppression while facial expression means emotion.

Also, unreal motif is sometimes better to express feelings. The process of realizing this is as follows. At first, I was just painting a picture of animals, for I was interested in the visual touch of a texture of oil color and collective lines of tempera. The emotion appeared on the face, then animals shaped into human forms. That makes me feel their thoughts rather than what they are. The hint to take a new turn is always in my paintings and drawings themselves.

My paintings are still wavering between animal forms and human forms.

■BIOGRAPHY■

Yui Ogura was born in Kanagawa Japan in 1985. She grew up in a community close to urban areas, with her friends, family and dogs. In contrast to her peaceful everyday life, Yui was interested in things that generate primitive fighting instincts in herself, such as drumbeats, war cries and ancient Greece.

Yui spent a lot of time at the Kabuki-za Theater during high school, appreciating the Japanese traditional art, Kabuki. She was fascinated by the traditional beauty of style found not only in Kabuki, but also in Japanese paintings by Kiyokata Kaburaki, Shoen Uemura etc., and was greatly inspired by them.

Yui studied oil painting at Musashino Art University. While she was in graduate school, sophisticated elements and fighting instincts emerged in her paintings. In addition to those, she currently expresses "emotions neglected in daily life" in her works. It is because Yui recognized their existence in the process of seeking primitiveness in herself.

After graduating from Musashino Art University master's degree, she participated in group exhibition "Kioku (memory)" in 2013. 2013 "Villain's portraits" galerie H, Tokyo, Japan. 2017 "Attack of Rage" galerie H, Tokyo, Japan. She holds solo exhibitions and group exhibitions every year.
